Recap of the game
In the blitz game which ends first, Zhu from UCLA establishes a solid lead in the opening stage. By keeping that lead safely, Zhu wins a lead for the UC team. Then games of the second board and the third board finish consecutively. Lu from Berkeley and Qin from BNU fight throughout their game. In the decisive battle when several groups of black and white tangle, the girl from BNU keenly catches a hasty atari of her opponent. Qin then kills Lu’s dragon, and terminates the game. In the peaceful game of the third board, Wei from Berkeley and Peng from BNU push the game to endgame stage in 100 moves. At the center of their board, however, Peng plays a series of tesujis to win the close game.
BNU’s two victories overturn the match, putting pressure on Pan from UCLA who plays the first board. As players who love combats, Pan and Luo from BNU make an intense fight in the opening stage, which exhausts their regular reserved time. Under the pressure of byo-yomi, Luo makes a mistake, and that costs him a dragon and the game.
Now the result of the match depends completely on the fourth board. Wu from BNU, keeps a lead of about 15 points before endgame stage, and it seems that there is no problem for him to win. However, Zhang from UCLA plays in a tenacious manner. By catching a connection problem of Wu’s group, Zhang gets a great reward for his perseverance, and overturns the game. Although Wu tries hard in the rest of the game, Zhang does not give Wu any chance to fight back. In the end, Zhang wins by resign.
When all five games finish, UC team beats BNU by a neck with score 3:2. Having prepared for two weeks, both teams play a satisfactory friendly match. The victory of UC team indeed brings confidence to Go fans of UCLA and Berkeley.
