Players from UCLA competed against players from University of Tokyo online on Saturday, February 14th in a friendship match. The University of Tokyo team defeated the UCLA Go team with a 3-2 record. Players from both teams are active members of their university Go club. On the top board, Chaohao Pan, the team captain of UCLA, lost against Kentaro Tsutsumi. As the black player, Pan starts a fight with the result favorable for him in the opening stage. However, Tsutsumi catches a chance to invade the moyo of black. Pan then loses a string of key stones when trying to capture the invading white dragon, and thus resigned. On the second board, Norman Tsai from UCLA lost to Hikaru Ishikawa. Until the eightieth move, the game is peaceful and balanced. Ishikawa then punishes an overplay of Tsai by a keen move, resulting in the death of a group of Tsai, and terminates the game. Leo Zhang got the first victory for UCLA by winning the game against Takaya Matsuura on the fifth board. The game is close after an intense fight in upper-right, but Matsuura made a big mistake in the early endgame stage, which cost him the life a huge group as well as the game. The game on the fourth board has a pattern similar to the fourth board, but Chenyi Zhu from UCLA lost the game against Keito Tabuchi. The mistake made by Zhu in the early endgame stage is relatively minor, but it also cost him the game. As the only member of the UCLA Go Club who comes from Japan, Izuki Matsuba defeated his compatriot, Shuhei Nakajima, with a solid lead throughout the game. All players reviewed their games carefully, as they deeply enjoyed the match. “It is a great experience to play with the Japanese players. They are strong, but I am confident that the victory will belong to us the next time. “ said Chenyi Zhu.
